About

A lampreia-marinha (Petromyzon marinus) e um antigo peixe parasita sem mandibula que persistiu praticamente inalterado durante 360 milhoes de anos. Tem um corpo alongado semelhante a uma enguia que atinge 90 cm e uma boca caracteristica em forma de ventosa bordeada de dentes afiados usados para raspar a carne de peixes hospedeiros. Nativa do Atlantico Norte e do mar Baltico, as populacoes anadromicas migram do oceano para cursos de agua doce para desovar. E invasora nos Grandes Lagos desde a decada de 1830, onde dizimou as pescarias comerciais ate serem implementados programas de controlo.

Habitat & Distribution

Found across multiple habitat types including tropical and subtropical moist broadleaf forests, tropical and subtropical dry broadleaf forests, and tropical and subtropical grasslands and savannas, among 4 distinct biome types spanning the Australasia and Indomalayan realms. Populations are also found in montane and highland environments at higher elevations.

Widely distributed across Asia (Indonesia), Europe (4 countries), and North America (Canada, United States). Listed as Near Threatened, this species requires ongoing monitoring to prevent population decline.
