About

3億6000万年間ほとんど変化せずに存続してきた古代の寄生性無顎類魚類であるウミヤツメ(Petromyzon marinus)は、最大90cmに達する細長いウナギのような体と、宿主魚の肉を削り取る鋭い歯が並んだ特徴的な吸盤状の口を持ちます。北大西洋とバルト海が原産で、遡河性個体群は産卵のために海から淡水の河川に移動します。1830年代から五大湖に侵入し、ヤツメウナギ防除プログラムが実施されるまで商業漁業を壊滅させました。

Found across multiple habitat types including tropical and subtropical moist broadleaf forests, tropical and subtropical dry broadleaf forests, and tropical and subtropical grasslands and savannas, among 4 distinct biome types spanning the Australasia and Indomalayan realms. Populations are also found in montane and highland environments at higher elevations.
