Um dos lagomorfos mais prolíficos e amplamente distribuídos do mundo, o coelho-europeu (Oryctolagus cuniculus) habita pradarias, prados e matagais desde a Península Ibérica — sua área de distribuição nativa — até todos os continentes, exceto a Antártida, como espécie introduzida globalmente. Vivendo em complexas tocas subterrâneas em grupos sociais, os coelhos são uma espécie presa fundamental, sustentando águias, raposas, linces e doninhas onde quer que ocorram. Sua rápida taxa de reprodução os torna tanto ecologicamente vitais quanto um desafio como espécie invasora.
