Entre os papagaios com dimorfismo sexual mais marcante da Terra, os machos do papagaio eclecto são de um verde-esmeralda brilhante, enquanto as fêmeas são de um vermelho vivo e azul — tão diferentes que durante muito tempo foram classificados como espécies separadas. Nativos das Ilhas Salomão, Nova Guiné, nordeste da Austrália e Ilhas Maluku, habitam o dossel da floresta pluvial. Inhabits tropical and subtropical moist broadleaf forests and tropical and subtropical dry broadleaf forests spanning the Australasia and Indomalayan realms. Populations are also found in montane and highland environments at higher elevations.
