Um tangarazinho distinto de alta altitude das páramos andinos abertos e bordas de floresta arbustiva do Equador e Peru até a Bolívia, o tangarazinho-de-dorso-preto (Urothraupis stolzmanni) tem partes superiores preto-jet contrastando com partes inferiores brancas e é encontrado exclusivamente na zona alto-andina aberta e fria acima dos 3.000 metros. Forrageiam em pequenos bandos consumindo sementes, frutos e insetos em vegetação arbustiva de páramo. Sua plumagem contrastante e marcante é incomum entre os tangarazinhos andinos. Classificado como Pouco Preocupante com populações estáveis nas altitudes andinas.
