Una tangara característica de alta altitud de páramos andinos abiertos y bordes de bosque arbustivo desde Ecuador y Perú hasta Bolivia. El tangara arbusto dorsinegro presenta partes superiores negras como el azabache en contraste con partes inferiores blancas, y se encuentra exclusivamente en la zona alto-andina abierta y fría por encima de los 3.000 metros. Forrajea en pequeñas bandadas sobre semillas, bayas e insectos en la vegetación arbustiva del páramo. Su llamativo plumaje contrastante es inusual entre las tangaras andinas. Clasificada como Preocupación Menor con poblaciones estables en los Andes altos.
