About

A distinctive high-altitude tanager of open Andean páramo and scrubby forest edges from Ecuador and Peru to Bolivia, black-backed bush tanagers have jet black upper parts contrasting with white underparts and are found exclusively in the open, cold, high-Andean zone above 3,000 meters. They forage in small flocks on seeds, berries, and insects in scrubby páramo vegetation. Their bold contrasting plumage is unusual among Andean tanagers. Listed as Least Concern with stable high-Andean populations.
