Common rush case-bearer

<em>Coleophora alticolella</em>, the rush case-bearer, is a small moth in the family Coleophoridae, characterized by the distinctive portable cases constructed by its larvae. The species is distributed across northern and central Europe, with documented records from Belgium, Denmark, Norway, and Sweden. As its common name indicates, larvae are associated with rush plants, primarily <em>Juncus</em> species, from which they feed on seeds housed within portable tubular cases constructed from plant material. The larvae attach these cases to the seed heads of rushes and feed from within, a highly specialized feeding strategy typical of coleophorid moths. Adults are small, narrow-winged moths with wingspans typically under 15 millimeters, typical of the family Coleophoridae. The species is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, reflecting stable populations associated with the widespread occurrence of rush habitats in northern European wetlands, bogs, and damp grasslands.
