About
Emmelina monodactyla, the common plume moth, is a member of the family Pterophoridae, distinguished by its characteristic T-shaped resting posture with deeply cleft wings held at right angles to the body, giving the appearance of a small stick or grass stem. The species is one of the most widespread plume moths globally, with confirmed records across Africa spanning six countries, Asia spanning some 25 countries, Europe spanning approximately 39 countries, North America spanning five countries, and South America including Venezuela. It is typically associated with bindweeds and morning glories in the family Convolvulaceae, which serve as larval host plants. Emmelina monodactyla is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, reflecting its enormous distribution range and general abundance. Adults are typically pale grey or straw-coloured and are frequently attracted to artificial lights at night. Biological traits such as average adult lifespan, wing dimensions beyond general descriptions, body weight, and detailed dietary composition across its vast range remain poorly documented in the scientific literature. The species can complete multiple generations per year in warmer climates, contributing to its success across diverse geographic regions.
