Clown beetle

Atholus bimaculatus is a small predatory beetle in the family Histeridae, commonly known as a clown beetle or hister beetle. The species is recognized by its compact, strongly convex black body, typically 3–5 mm long, with two reddish spots on the elytra—the characteristic feature reflected in its species name. Like other histerid beetles, A. bimaculatus is a predator of fly larvae and other small invertebrates, particularly in decaying organic matter. It frequents dung, carrion, rotting plant material, and compost heaps where dipteran larvae are abundant. Adults are capable fliers and can locate resource patches quickly. The species is distributed across Europe and has also been recorded in parts of the Americas, suggesting either natural range expansion or introduction through organic material transport. Histerid beetles play a beneficial role in natural decomposition processes by regulating populations of pest flies. The beetle's body form is highly adapted for life in compacted substrates, with strongly clubbed antennae that fold into grooves and retractable legs. A. bimaculatus is classified as Least Concern given its wide distribution and association with abundant organic matter habitats.
