About

世界最大のスイレンであるオオオニバスは直径3メートルに達する円形の浮葉を持ち、子供の体重を支えられるほどの強度があり、縁が20 cmほど立ち上がっている。アマゾン川流域の暖かく浅い水域に自生し、白い花は夜に開いてコガネムシ類の花粉媒介者を取り込み、翌日には花がピンク色に変わって花粉を付けたまま虫が脱出する。アマゾンの生物多様性を象徴する植物である。
