Xylaria corniformisは熱帯および亜熱帯林生息地の腐朽木材に硬く角状またはシカの角状の黒い子座を形成する棍棒形の炭質子嚢菌類です。森林生態系において木質セルロースの分解に貢献する腐生性木材分解菌です。絶滅危惧（EN）に分類されており、熱帯の森林破壊と原生林生息地の消失が脅威となっています。
