Definition
An animal, especially an insect, that transfers pollen between flowers, enabling plant reproduction.
Detailed Explanation
Pollinators — primarily bees, butterflies, moths, flies, beetles, birds, and bats — contribute an estimated $235-577 billion annually to global food production. One-third of all food consumed by humans depends on animal pollination. Wild bee diversity (over 20,000 species globally) is declining due to pesticides, habitat loss, disease, and invasive species. Managed honeybee colonies supplement but cannot replace wild pollinator services for many crops.
