Hemolymph

혈림프

Definition

The circulatory fluid of insects that bathes organs directly, analogous to blood in vertebrates.

Detailed Explanation

Unlike vertebrate blood, hemolymph is not contained in closed vessels — it fills body cavities and surrounds organs directly. A simple tubular heart pumps hemolymph forward; it returns through open channels. Hemolymph lacks hemoglobin (oxygen is delivered by tracheae), but contains hemocytes (immune cells) that engulf pathogens, and clotting proteins to seal wounds. In some cold-tolerant insects, hemolymph contains antifreeze proteins preventing ice crystal formation.
