Definition
The underground network of roots that anchors a plant, absorbs water and minerals, and stores nutrients.
Detailed Explanation
Root architecture is remarkably plastic — roots proliferate in nutrient-rich patches and explore less fertile soil with fewer lateral roots. The total root length of a single rye plant can exceed 600 km. Mycorrhizal associations effectively extend root absorptive surface many fold. In dry ecosystems, deep tap roots access groundwater; in waterlogged soils, pneumatophores (aerial roots) enable gas exchange.
