Definition
A structured community of microorganisms attached to a surface and enclosed in a self-produced protective matrix.
Detailed Explanation
Biofilms are not merely cell aggregates — they are organized communities with internal communication via quorum sensing, structural channels for nutrient flow, and extreme antibiotic tolerance (up to 1,000 times greater than planktonic cells). Dental plaque is a familiar biofilm. Medical device-associated biofilm infections are notoriously difficult to treat. Biofilms on ship hulls and industrial pipes cause enormous economic losses through biofouling and corrosion.
