Bilateral symmetry is associated with directed movement — having a distinct front end (head) promotes cephalization, the concentration of sensory organs and neural tissue at the anterior. This head-first orientation is adaptive for active predators and prey. Most motile animals, from flatworms to humans, show bilateral symmetry, which allows for coordinated, directional locomotion through environments.
