El mielerito purpura (Cyanerpes caeruleus) es un pequenyo tangara brillantemente colorido; los machos exhiben plumaje violeta-purpura profundo con alas negras y un llamativo parche amarillo en la pata, mientras que las hembras son de color verde intenso con estrias amarillas. Habita en los doseles de bosques tropicales humedos desde Colombia y Venezuela hasta Bolivia y Brasil, frecuentando bordes de bosque y bosque secundario. Sondea flores con su largo pico curvo en busca de nectar y tambien consume bayas e insectos pequenyos. Es un importante polinizador de flores del dosel tropical.
