Russula atrorubens is a medium-sized mushroom with a dark red to purplish-red cap, white firm flesh, and a characteristic acrid, spicy taste. This ectomycorrhizal fungus forms nutrient-exchange partnerships with conifer roots and fruits in summer and autumn.
