Penicillium expansum is a ubiquitous blue-green mold most notorious for causing blue mold rot on apples, pears, and other pome fruits. It inhabits soil, decaying plant material, and stored fruits worldwide in temperate and subtropical regions. This saprotrophic fungus produces the mycotoxin patulin and decomposes complex organic compounds in food and plant matter.
