Mastogloia braunii is a benthic freshwater diatom with characteristic partitae, small compartments along the cell margin that store mucilage. It inhabits benthic zones of alkaline, hard-water lakes and streams in temperate and subtropical regions. This photosynthetic diatom attaches to mineral substrates and aquatic plant surfaces in clear, nutrient-moderate waters.
