Habita zonas bentonicas de lagos y arroyos alcalinos de agua dura en regiones templadas y subtropicales. Esta diatomea fotosintetica se adhiere a sustratos minerales y superficies de plantas acuaticas en aguas claras con nutrientes moderados.
