<em>Salpa fusiformis</em>, the common salp, is a free-swimming, barrel-shaped tunicate in the class Thaliacea, order Salpida. This gelatinous zooplankton species is widely distributed in temperate and subpolar oceanic waters, with records from Danish, Swedish, and Taiwanese waters, reflecting its broad distribution across the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans. Common salps are transparent or semi-transparent pelagic animals that typically range from 2 to 10 centimeters in length as solitary individuals, though they can form long chains of aggregate individuals through asexual budding. They are filter feeders, drawing seawater through their barrel-shaped bodies and extracting phytoplankton, bacteria, and fine particulate organic matter using a mucus filter net.
