Coconut palm

The Coconut Palm (Cocos nucifera) is the sole species of the genus Cocos and one of the most economically significant plants on Earth, cultivated throughout tropical coastal regions worldwide. Reaching heights of 20–30 metres, it features a slender, often curved trunk topped by a crown of pinnate fronds that can extend 4–6 metres in length. The species thrives in sandy, well-drained soils and tolerates saltwater exposure, making it uniquely adapted to littoral and strand habitats. Originating likely in the Indo-Pacific region, possibly the western Pacific or Indian Ocean island chains, coconut palms have been dispersed by ocean currents and human cultivation to coastal tropics on every inhabited continent. The large fruits—botanically drupes—are encased in a fibrous husk surrounding a hard endocarp, with white endosperm and nutritious coconut water within. Every part of the plant has cultural and economic uses: the flesh yields coconut oil and desiccated coconut; the water serves as a beverage; the fibrous husk produces coir for rope and matting; the fronds provide thatching material; and the trunk serves as timber. Cocos nucifera is not evaluated for conservation risk given its widespread cultivation and ecological resilience. Genetic studies indicate two major domestication lineages—Pacific and Indo-Atlantic—suggesting multiple independent domestication events in human prehistory.
