Ustilago filiformis e um fungo carvo da familia Ustilaginaceae, um biotrofo obrigado que infecta gramineas de canaveiral (especies de Glyceria) e transforma suas partes florais em massas de teliosporos escuros. Manipula o desenvolvimento da planta hospedeira para criar galhas no lugar de ovarios normais, que entao dispersam os esporos fungicos. Infeccoes de carvo por especies de Ustilago podem reduzir significativamente a producao de sementes de suas hospedeiras gramineas.
