Thiothrix annulata e uma gammaproteobacteria filamentosa oxidadora de enxofre da familia Thiotrichaceae, que forma tricomas com bainhas aderidas a substratos em ambientes aquaticos ricos em sulfeto. Oxida compostos de enxofre reduzido como fonte de energia e armazena granulos de enxofre elementar dentro de suas celulas, dando as colonias uma aparencia esbranquicada. Habita nascentes sulfurosas, sistemas de esgoto e riachos de agua doce com niveis elevados de sulfeto.
