Thiothrix annulata es una gammaproteobacteria filamentosa oxidadora de azufre de la familia Thiotrichaceae, que forma tricomas con vainas adheridas a sustratos en ambientes acuaticos ricos en sulfuro. Oxida compuestos de azufre reducido como fuente de energia y almacena granulos de azufre elemental dentro de sus celulas, dando a las colonias una apariencia blanquecina. Habita manantiales sulfurosos, sistemas de alcantarillado y arroyos de agua dulce con niveles elevados de sulfuro.
