Ocorre entre 1.200 e 3.000 metros de altitude na Venezuela, Colombia, Equador e Peru, em florestas montanas e arbustais. E um dos beija-flores andinos mais comuns e e um defensor territorial altamente agressivo nos canteiros de flores.
