안데스 산맥과 베네수엘라 고지 테푸이에 서식하는 크고 화려한 벌새로, 햇빛에 강렬하게 반짝이는 광택 있는 청록색 깃털과 이리데센트 보라-파란색 귀 패치와 턱을 지녀 그 이름에 걸맞다. 베네수엘라, 콜롬비아, 에콰도르, 페루에 걸쳐 해발 1,200-3,000미터의 산악 숲과 덤불에서 발견된다. 가장 흔한 안데스 벌새 중 하나로, 꽃 군락에서 매우 공격적이고 영역성이 강한 방어 행동을 보인다.
