Euglena gasterosteus é uma alga euglenóide de água doce com corpo celular fusiforme e flexível, com cloroplastos que possibilitam a fotossíntese em ambientes aquáticos bem iluminados. Habita lagoas, valas e águas de movimento lento ricas em matéria orgânica. Como todas as euglenas, pode alternar entre nutrição autotrófica e heterotrófica e usa um flagelo para se locomover na coluna de água.
