Euglena gasterosteus es un alga euglenofita de agua dulce con un cuerpo celular fusiforme y flexible, con cloroplastos que permiten la fotosíntesis en entornos acuáticos bien iluminados. Habita estanques, zanjas y aguas dulces de flujo lento ricas en materia orgánica. Como todas las euglenofitas, puede alternar entre nutrición autótrofa y heterótrofa y usa un flagelo para desplazarse en la columna de agua.
