Um beija-flor de medio porte e plumagem predominantemente verde com uma distintiva mancha auricular violeta-azul iridescente e faixa no peito, o beija-flor-orelhaverde-mexicano (Colibri thalassinus) habita florestas montanas e de altitude desde o Mexico pelo sul da America Central, em altitudes de 1.000 a 3.000 metros. Os machos sao agressivos, muito vocais na defesa do territorio e realizam vistos sos exibicoes de voo. Reproduzem-se em grandes altitudes, mas algumas populacoes realizam migracoes altitudinais sazonais. Esta entre os beija-flores mais comuns nos habitats mexicanos de pinheiro-carvalho e floresta nebular de montanha.
