Methanotorris igneus는 Methanococcales목의 초고온성 메탄생성 고균으로 심해 열수 분출공 환경에서 약 88°C에 달하는 온도에서 번성한다. 절대혐기성 조건에서 분자 수소를 이용해 이산화탄소를 환원하여 메탄을 생성한다. 고온에서 촉매 활성을 보이는 열안정성 효소가 생명공학적 관심을 받고 있다.
