아프리카에서 가장 위험한 대형 포유류인 하마(Hippopotamus amphibius)는 최대 3,200kg에 달하며 사하라 이남 아프리카의 강, 호수, 습지에 서식한다. 반수생 생활을 하며 하루 16시간까지 물에 잠겨 체온을 조절하고 밤에는 육지에서 풀을 뜯는다. 온순해 보이지만 매우 공격적이고 영역 방어가 강해 매년 수백 명의 인명 피해를 일으킨다. 취약 종으로 서식지 손실과 상아를 노린 밀렵으로 위협받고 있다.
