바이올렛귀벌새속 중 유일하게 갈색이 주를 이루는 갈색바이올렛귀벌새는 갈색빛 청동색 윗면과 진단적인 보라색-파란색 귀 패치가 특징입니다. 과테말라에서 베네수엘라, 콜롬비아, 브라질, 볼리비아에 이르는 광범위한 습한 산림과 산림 가장자리에 서식합니다. 저지대부터 해발 2,000미터까지의 고도에서 산림 내부, 산림 가장자리, 정원에서 발견됩니다. 벌새치고는 비교적 칙칙한 깃털임에도 직사광선에서 보라색 귀 패치가 선명하게 빛납니다.

안데스 산맥과 베네수엘라 고지 테푸이에 서식하는 크고 화려한 벌새로, 햇빛에 강렬하게 반짝이는 광택 있는 청록색 깃털과 이리데센트 보라-파란색 귀 패치와 턱을 지녀 그 이름에 걸맞다. 베네수엘라, 콜롬비아, 에콰도르, 페루에 걸쳐 해발 1,200-3,000미터의 산악 숲과 덤불에서 발견된다. 가장 흔한 안데스 벌새 중 하나로, 꽃 군락에서 매우 공격적이고 영역성이 강한 방어 행동을 보인다.
