メキシコ南部から中央アメリカを経て西部アマゾンにかけての湿潤低地・山麓林に生息する大型で鮮明な模様のハチドリで、Florisuga mellivora の雄は光沢のある濃紺の頭部、鮮やかな白い胸部、白い先端の尾羽を持ち、印象的なコントラストをなす。雌は珍しい羽毛多型を示し、一部は雄に似た外見をとる。これは雄による嫌がらせを減らすための適応と考えられている。林縁と樹冠の専門種で、花木や着生植物で採餌する。
