ツヤハナヤブリは、光の当たり方によって深みのある金属光沢を放つ光沢のある藍黒色の羽毛を持つ中型のハナヤブリで、特化した鉤状の嘴で花の基部に穴を開け、受粉をせずに蜜を盗む。これは鳥類において独立して複数回進化した蜜泥棒行動の一形態である。コロンビアからボリビアにかけての標高1,500〜3,500mのアンデス湿潤雲霧林と林縁に生息し、管状の花を咲かせる植物が豊富な林縁や庭でよく見られる。
