メンフクロウ(Tyto alba)は、南極大陸を除くすべての大陸に生息する世界で最も広く分布するフクロウの一種で、熱帯雨林から温帯農地まであらゆる生息地タイプで見られます。ハート型の顔盤が音を左右非対称に配置された耳に集め、完全な暗闇の中でも音だけで獲物を捉えることができます。獲物を丸呑みにし、消化できない骨と毛を圧縮したペレットとして吐き出すため、農業においてネズミ類の防除に役立つ存在です。
