コロンビアからボリビアにかけてのアンデス山脈とアンデス間谷地に生息する小型のウッドスターハチドリで、Chaetocercus mulsant の雄は体重わずか2.5gと最小級のハチドリの一つである。雄は鮮やかなアメジスト紫色の喉班、白い腹部、緑色の脇腹を誇る。標高1,500〜3,500メートルの林縁と庭園に生息する。小柄ながら攻撃的で機動性に優れ、寒冷なアンデスの夜にはエネルギーを節約するため休眠状態に入る。
