Mycenastrum corium is a thick-skinned, terrestrial puffball with a tough, leathery outer peridium and powdery olive-brown spore mass at maturity. It inhabits steppe grasslands, sandy soils, and dry open habitats in continental and semi-arid regions of Europe, central Asia, and North America. This saprotrophic fungus decomposes organic matter in arid grassland soils.

Found across multiple habitat types including tropical and subtropical moist broadleaf forests, tropical and subtropical dry broadleaf forests, and tropical and subtropical grasslands and savannas, among 5 distinct biome types within the Neotropic biogeographic realm. Populations are also found in montane and highland environments at higher elevations.
