About

The Clay Fan-foot, Paracolax tristalis, is a noctuid moth in the family Erebidae found across Europe and temperate Asia, where it inhabits deciduous woodland, hedgerows, and scrubby habitats. The species belongs to the fan-foot subfamily Herminiinae, a group characterized by the elongated labial palps that project forward from the head and by the habit of adults resting with wings held flat. The Clay Fan-foot has pale clay-brown to buff forewings marked with fine cross-lines and dark discal spots, providing excellent camouflage against bark and dead leaves. Adults are nocturnal and are attracted to light. The larvae feed on dead and decaying plant matter, particularly dry leaves of oak, hazel, and other deciduous trees, making the species an important component of woodland leaf-litter decomposition. The life cycle typically involves one generation per year, with adults flying in midsummer. The species is found from Britain and western Europe east to Japan, inhabiting a wide range of temperate woodland types at low to moderate elevations. Like many woodland moths, the Clay Fan-foot may be affected by changes in woodland management practices, including the removal of dead wood and accumulated leaf litter. The species is not considered threatened.
