Biogeography

Endemic Species

고유종

Definition

A species found naturally only in a specific geographic region and nowhere else on Earth.

Detailed Explanation

Islands and isolated mountain ranges harbor the highest rates of endemism — Madagascar's lemurs and Australia's marsupials evolved in isolation over millions of years. Endemic species face elevated extinction risk because their entire population occupies a limited range, so habitat loss can eliminate them entirely. Oceanic islands like Hawaii and the Galápagos have extraordinarily high endemism but have also suffered catastrophic extinction rates from introduced species.
