<em>Hemithea aestivaria</em>, the common emerald, is a geometrid moth in the family Geometridae, classified as Least Concern by the IUCN Red List. The species is documented in Belgium, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, and the United States, occurring across virtually all terrestrial and freshwater biome types within its range in Europe and parts of North America. <em>Hemithea aestivaria</em> is distinguished by its bright green wings, which provide effective camouflage against foliage when the moth is at rest. The wings typically fade to a yellowish-green or whitish hue with age. Adults are nocturnal and are attracted to light, flying from June through August. The larvae are generalist feeders that typically feed on a wide variety of deciduous shrubs and trees, including hawthorn, blackthorn, oak, birch, and bramble. Like many geometrid larvae, caterpillars of <em>Hemithea aestivaria</em> move in a characteristic looping gait and often rest stretched out along twigs, resembling plant stems. The species inhabits woodland edges, hedgerows, scrub, and gardens across its range. As both a herbivore and a prey item for bats and insectivorous birds, it occupies an important position in temperate food webs.
