Definition
Ribonucleic acid, a molecule involved in coding, decoding, regulation, and expression of genes.
Detailed Explanation
RNA bridges the gap between the DNA blueprint and functional proteins. Messenger RNA carries gene sequence from nucleus to ribosome; transfer RNA brings amino acids; ribosomal RNA forms the ribosome structure itself. Non-coding RNAs — including microRNAs and long non-coding RNAs — regulate gene expression in ways only recently discovered. The RNA world hypothesis proposes that RNA, not DNA, was the original genetic molecule of early life.
