Pontibacter aurantiacus es una bacteria Gram-negativa de pigmentacion naranja perteneciente al filo Bacteroidetes, aislada por primera vez en el Mar Negro. Habita entornos de sedimentos costeros marinos salinos. Este quimioheterotrofo aerobio produce pigmentos carotenoides y degrada materia organica en ambientes acuaticos salinos.
