Listeria monocytogenes es una bacteria grampositiva y móvil, agente causante de la listeriosis, una grave enfermedad transmitida por alimentos especialmente peligrosa para mujeres embarazadas, recién nacidos, ancianos e individuos inmunocomprometidos. Es un patógeno intracelular facultativo que se encuentra en suelo, agua y una amplia gama de productos alimentarios, capaz de crecer a temperaturas de refrigeración. Los brotes se asocian frecuentemente con alimentos listos para consumir contaminados, como fiambres, quesos blandos y verduras crudas.
