Translation

Translation occurs at ribosomes — molecular machines that read mRNA three bases at a time (codons) and add the corresponding amino acid to a growing protein chain. The sequence of amino acids determines protein shape and function. A single gene can produce multiple protein variants through alternative splicing. Antibiotics like streptomycin and erythromycin work by disrupting bacterial ribosomes while sparing eukaryotic ribosomes.
