Found across multiple habitat types including tropical and subtropical moist broadleaf forests, tropical and subtropical dry broadleaf forests, and tropical and subtropical grasslands and savannas, among 4 distinct biome types spanning the Australasia and Indomalayan realms. Populations are also found in montane and highland environments at higher elevations.

Microcalicium ahlneri es un liquen diminuto con talo gris palido y minusculos apotecios pediculados, caracteristicos de los hongos calicioides. Crece sobre la corteza de viejos arboles caducifolios en bosques templados no perturbados de Europa. Este liquen necesita condiciones de bosque antiguo y es sensible a los cambios en el microhabitat de la corteza provocados por la contaminacion atmosferica o la gestion forestal.
