Un pequeño estrilda de hábitats semiáridos y matorrales secos en toda el África subsahariana y la zona del Sahel, los estrildas de rabadilla negra tienen un llamativo pico y rabadilla carmesí que contrasta con su cuerpo pardo grisáceo. Habitan pastizales secos, bordes de sabana y zonas cultivadas, alimentándose de pequeñas semillas de gramíneas. Aunque pequeños y discretos, son aves de aviario populares en Europa y Asia por su delicada apariencia y su comportamiento activo y social.
