El panda gigante (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) es un animal emblemático de China, célebre por su pelaje blanco y negro y su dieta basada casi exclusivamente en bambú. Su estado de conservación es vulnerable (VU), es el animal bandera de la conservación internacional de la vida silvestre, y su población ha experimentado cierta recuperación en los últimos años.
Surirella biseriata es una gran diatomea de agua dulce en forma de barca con dos filas de fibulas que forman un patron distintivo a lo largo de ambos lados de la valva. Habita zonas bentonicas de lagos y rios de agua dulce limpia a moderadamente enriquecida en regiones templadas. Esta diatomea fotosintetica contribuye a las comunidades de algas bentonicas y a la produccion de materia organica.
